What is a University of Opportunity?
Our mission is to be recognised as the University of Opportunity for the UK; a University that will not accept any gaps in access, success or progression for our students.
We will go further than we ever have before to ensure that support is in place to enable every student from every background to succeed, at every stage of their university career. Our approach will be comprehensive and university wide, to ensure that our students are given the help and support they really need to be successful and achieve their dreams.
We will need your help to make this happen.
How does a University of Opportunity make a difference?
We know that talented students can achieve their potential, whatever their background may be. We also know that students who have had to overcome the most significant barriers in their personal, social and domestic lives, who grew up in areas of deprivation, or were the first in their family to come to university, need additional support.
Scholarships are key.
In these uncertain times, one thing we can be certain of is that more of our students need our help than ever before. Scholarships play a key role in helping to level the playing field. Scholarships enable the students who stand to gain the most from higher education to take advantage of all it has to offer. But more than this: scholarships help to instil a confidence in our students that comes from knowing that someone believes in them. This is where you come in.
Above all else, we want our diverse student community to truly reflect wider society, we want to remove any gaps in access, progression and success and we want to work together as a community of shared purpose to support opportunity and fulfil ambitions.

Knowing someone was supporting me with this scholarship helped greatly; I didn't feel alone and I felt I had someone championing me. When times were difficult I knew I had help there and it made me want to keep persevering. The York Opportunity Scholarship donors have helped to broaden my opportunities - I am very grateful for the chance to better my future and it has given me hope.
